Preventive Dentistry

Is It Time for a Checkup?

Prevention is a huge part of our practice because it’s much better for our patients if we’re able to stop a dental issue before it starts rather than have to fix it later. Our patients appreciate this as well because it means they get to spend less time in the dental office and more time just enjoying their smile! Below, you’ll find a list of services that will help you and your family not only achieve beautiful and healthy smiles but also maintain them for years to come.

Checkups & Cleanings

Woman in dental chair receiving x-raysThese are two of the most basic services in all of dentistry, and the reason they are part of almost every appointment is simple: they work! With just two checkups and cleanings each year, we can stop most dental issues while they are small and easy to treat, as well as keep your teeth nice and clean year after year

For a dental cleaning, one of our skilled hygienists will use sophisticated tools to clear away plaque and bacteria that have built up on your teeth and gums. This treatment will be able to clean those hard to reach spots that you can’t get at home, so they’re very important even if you brush and floss your teeth every day.

Then, Dr. Thomas Redfern will perform a thorough oral exam where he’ll check for the signs of tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and more. By coming in for these checkups regularly, you’ll be saving yourself a lot of time and discomfort in the future because Dr. Redfern will be able to catch and treat any dental issues you have before they can become a major headache.

Children’s Dentistry

Firstly, it’ll give Dr. Redfern a chance to make sure their teeth are coming in and developing correctly. If there is a problem, treatment at a young age is much easier and quicker than waiting till later. And secondly, it’ll send a very strong message to your child that taking care of their teeth is important, and with Dr. Redfern’s and your help, your child will start to learn healthy habits that will help keep their smile strong throughout their entire life.

Dental Sealants

Child receiving dental sealantsDo you have a child at home who is still learning to brush their teeth? If so, it’s likely that they aren’t cleaning their back teeth very well simply because it can be difficult for small children to reach them. To give them a little extra protection right where they need it, we can apply something called a dental sealant.

For this, we’ll paint on a thin, clear layer of a plastic-based substance directly onto the teeth to protect them from plaque and food particles. They only take minutes to apply, and they can easily last for a few years.

Nightguards for Bruxism

Hands holding a nightguard for bruxismBruxism is a condition where a person unconsciously clenches and grinds their teeth, and most people actually do it while they are asleep. Over time, this can severely wear down the teeth and even cause them to break! Fortunately, we can offer a simple solution for this sneaky habit in the form of a nightguard. It is a simple and easy to use mouthguard that works by placing a protective barrier between the teeth. You’ll only need to wear it at night, and it’ll be custom-made so that it comfortably fits over your teeth.

Mouthguards / Sportsguards

If you or anyone you care about enjoys sports like baseball, football, or basketball, you should always make sure the teeth are protected with a mouthguard. Our practice actually makes custom-made mouthguards, and they are much more comfortable and do a better job of protecting the teeth than anything you can just buy at the store. With our help, you can keep your mind on the game while avoiding needless accidents!

Oral Cancer Screening

To make sure this terrible disease never catches you or your family off guard, Dr. Redfern always performs an oral cancer screening during regular checkups. He’ll examine the lips, gums, cheeks, tongue, throat, and neck for any signs of the disease, and if he sees something that causes him concern, he can advise you on what to do next.

Fluoride Treatment

When consumed, it actually helps strengthen the teeth against tooth decay and cavities. While it’s very important for children while their teeth are still developing, it’s also very beneficial for adult smiles as well. This is why, as part of your regular checkup, we can include a fluoride treatment.

For this, we’ll put a fluoride-rich gel into a mouth tray, and you’ll simply place the tray on your teeth for 1-4 minutes. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s one of the best ways we can help fight cavities.

Toothpastes / Mouthwashes

This is why our office is always willing to recommend which products you should use to get the most out of your home routine, and we can even provide special, prescription-strength toothpaste like Fluoridex. By using the right products at home, you’ll be able to prevent many dental issues on your own so that your regular checkups will always be nice and easy.
